Marvão
The Nest of Eagle
Points of Interest
Marvão is a medieval fortified town planted on the peak of a hill that raises 865 meters above sea level. The architectural setting is perfectly fit for a place of great natural beauty. This town is a point of reference for tourism in the Alentejo. Apart from the Castle and its walls Marvão has a series of churches like the Igreja do Calvário or the Igreja de Santa Maria that deserve a visit. Before rising up to the “nest of the eagles ” you can visit the Portagem a Ponte Quinhentista and the Torre da Portagem, as well as the Roman ruins of Cidade da Ammaia.
Marvão has a very diverse cultural event calendar and generally always something seems happening. Along the year Gastronomic weeks are carried out such as the gastronomic Semana do Cabrito, of the Bacalhau or of the Comidas de Azeite. But two bigger events are the Al Mossassa – a medieval market in the beginning of October and the Festival do Castanheiro and the market of the chestnut in the beginning of November (in São Martinho).
